10am to 2pm virtual conference. KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Mark Jones Mark Jones is a freelance illustrator, animator, teacher, and movie maker. He previously taught K-12 art for 10 years in Iowa, and served as his district’s Arts Coordinator. In that time he authored an animation curriculum for his school district which stressed student collaboration. His current work ranges from production design for feature films, video game animation and coding, to leading k-12 visiting artist workshops and camps around the country. To see some of his work, visit his website at mrjonesart.com BREAKOUT SESSION: Teaching Animation: from High Tech to No Tech We will look at the short films of educator Mark Jones, which he created as part of his visiting artist workshops and animation camps. He will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the pitfalls and successes of teaching animation across a wide range of classroom settings (in-person or virtual), ability levels, and available tech budget. He will discuss how his curriculum has adapted over the years, always with the goal of giving students full ownership through all stages of creation - from initial brainstorming to final product. A breakout session will give an in-depth look at the software and hardware used, and participants will help create a short improvised animation. 10am to 2pm virtual conference. KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Flavia Zuñiga-West Flavia Zuñiga-West is a full-time art teacher, writer, speaker and advocate, who lives and works in Los Angeles. Following her work with the American Alliance of Museums and her successes practicing culturally responsive teaching in the elementary, middle, and high school classroom, she birthed the Adding Voices Conference, the first ever conference to focus solely on issues of culturally responsive pedagogy in the visual arts and to create a community for art educators of color and allies. BREAKOUT SESSION: Reframing & Marinating on Art History: Sustainable Strategies to Decolonize your Visual Arts Curriculum This is an interactive workshop that aids attendees who want to dismantle institutionalized racism in the Visual Arts. This workshop will guide you to question, assess, and change your curriculum to be culturally responsive to your students. Learn how to move away from a Eurocentric narrative and carve a permanent space for BIPoC & LGBTQ+ artists in your curriculum through authentic conversations, reframing, and critical analysis in the classroom. Here we will build your skills to re-contextualize art & art history by leading discussions using various critical lenses and walk away with resources to continue your work. |
